Asphalt Shingles; Fiberglass vs. Organic

There are two main types of asphalt shingles that your local Coralville roofing contractor works with: Fiberglass mat-based and organic mat-based asphalt shingles. Fiberglass shingles are thinner and lighter than organic shingles, as they are made from lightweight fiberglass. Take note that a bundle of asphalt shingles can weigh between 70 and 140 pounds, and there are usually 3 bundles of shingles per square, which is 100 square feet per square of shingles. Therefore, fiberglass mat-based shingles are easier to carry, making the roofer’s job easier getting them up on the rooftop. Fiberglass mat shingles are also more flame resistant and often come with slightly more favorable warranties than organic-based shingles do.

Organic-based shingles weigh more and are considered to be more durable as their mat backing is made from felt paper and asphalt. They are heavier because there is more asphalt in them than a fiberglass mat shingle has. Organic mat-based shingles also have more flexibility than fiberglass shingles. However, they are also known to absorb more water that can cause warping over time. Because of these differences, fiberglass mat shingles are more common in the south and central regions of the United States and organic mat-based shingles are utilized more in the north.

Fiberglass shingles installed on a home should be in compliance with ASTM D-3462 standards, and organic shingles used on a home should be in compliance with ASTM D-225. Many cities are now requiring shingle codes to meet these standards, so be sure to check with your local Coralville roofer and read the description on the shingles before you purchase them. Fiberglass and organic mat-based asphaltic shingles are reasonably priced too, making them a popular option for homeowners on a budget. Prices can vary anywhere from $25 to $80 per square.

3-Tab shingles have been used in roofing for a very long time and are still the most common type of material installed on residential homes. However, more and more homeowners are moving towards architectural shingles nowadays. Architectural shingles cost a little more initially, but are easier to install, as less consideration is required in securing straight lines. Architectural Shingles oftentimes have longer warranty periods too.

Architectural shingles typically cost most than 3-Tab shingles, however, their cost may be somewhat mitigated by a lower installation cost!!!

3-Tab shingles require more precision and skill to place, making for longer installation times as the Coralville roofing technician needs to make sure that there are no wavy shingle lines when installing them. Architectural shingles are a bit easier to install as the lines and shadows are designed to be more complex and provide depth and dimension to the roof. As a result, flaws in the installation process of architectural shingles are more difficult to recognize.

Whatever type of shingles you decide to use for your new roof, make sure you do some research about them and consult with your local Coralville roof repair service about which type is best for your home and budget. The roof is one of the most important parts of your home. Installation mistakes and the wrong kind of shingles can result in water damage and expensive repairs.
